Chakrata and its surroundings, in the Dehradun district have many a vantage points having a magnificent view of the snow clad, greater Himalayan range. The entire area has a delightfully green forest cover on its hills comprising of deodar, Himalayan oak and rhododendron trees. This region lies above the Yamuna valley in the Garhwal Himalayas and is approached from either Dehradun or Mussoorie. Chakrata town was established as a British cantonment about 125 years ago. Adding to the attraction of the region are old forest guest houses set up by the British in remote locations, the enchanting ‘Tiger falls', ancient temples and high alpine meadows.
This trip starts from GIO Camp Room on the Roof (Camp ROR). True to its name, the camp is set atop a series of step farms overlooking the Yamuna valley, 25 Km from Chakrata. Standing in splendid isolation at an altitude of 1900 m, the camp offers breathtaking views and holds special promise for genuine nature lovers. Far from the bustle of urban life, all you are likely to hear are sweet bird songs and the rush of mountain winds sweeping across the valley. From the camp you Drive to an old British campsite at Chaurani. Fabulous views of the Himalayas and majestic deodar trees create a truly beautiful picture. From Chaurani you bike to Chakrata gate. From Chakrata we drive up to Deoban which lies in the pristine lap of nature with great views, inviting meadows and a mélange of trees. The night will be spent here either camping or in a forest rest house. Next day we cycle down to the famous ‘tiger falls'. After a refreshing dip in the water and a picnic lunch you will drive back to Dehradun/Saharanpur.
