Chakrata and its surroundings, in the Dehradun district have many a vantage points having a magnificent view of the snow clad, greater Himalayan range. The entire area has a delightfully green forest cover on its hills comprising of deodar, Himalayan oak and rhododendron trees. This region lies above the Yamuna valley in the Garhwal Himalayas and is approached from either Dehradun or Mussoorie. Chakrata town was established as a British cantonment about 125 years ago. Adding to the attraction of the region are old forest guest houses set up by the British in remote locations, the enchanting ‘Ttiger falls', ancient temples and high alpine meadows.
This trip starts from GIO Camp Room on the Roof (Camp ROR). True to its name, the camp is set atop a series of step farms overlooking the Yamuna valley, 25 Km from Chakrata. Standing in splendid isolation at an altitude of 1900 m, the camp offers breathtaking views and holds special promise for genuine nature lovers. Far from the bustle of urban life, all you are likely to hear are sweet bird songs and the rush of mountain winds sweeping across the valley.
From the camp you hike to an old British campsite at Chaurani. Fabulous views of the Himalayas and majestic deodar trees create a truly beautiful picture. From Chaurani you bike to Chakrata and explore this quaint little town. Return to the camp in the evening by bike. Next day is all about having fun with the river. Yamuna is a relatively unexplored river. It's probably one of the most exciting rivers in India for class I to III+ rapids. Unlike the Ganges it has rapids in quick succession and is safe for beginners too. This stretch is mostly through a gorge and is quite scenic.
