Bhabha Pass Trek Home   Welcome Guest

A look at the map of Himanchal Pradesh shows that the road from Kinnaur makes a 200 kms detour to reach the valleys of western Spiti, traveling along the Satluj and Spiti rivers. Spitians from these fertile and populated valleys have always taken a 70 kms short cut by crossing the Bhaba pass, which directly descends to Wangtu in Kinnaur. Even today many Spitians studying in or with business to conduct in Shimla prefer to take this route instead of unreliable bus connections, encountering road blocks and expensive travel, while the shepherds on the both sides cross by similar traditional passes on the ridge.

Sarahan (2165 m/ 7100 ft) is a lovely place to stay and the temple of Bhimkali attracts worshippers from all over Kinnaur. More over, it is a place where one can acclamitsze before starting the trek and enjoy the entire Kand Mahadev Range. From Sarahan, descend to national highway at Jyura and drive 65 kms to Kafnu,a small village off the main road near the Wangtu bridge. Mules and porters required for the trek are hired from here.

Today we trek 15 kms. The trail passes through the fields of Kafnu, crosses the Bhaba Nala and continues along the left bank. The trail is fairly wide and well marked. Finally we reach the meadow of Mulling. In season the alpine flowers and carpet like meadows surround the camp. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 3: Mulling - Kara (3560 m/11676 ft) (6 kms/3 -4 hrs)

On day 2 we start trekking by crossing a river by a natural boulder bridge, gaining height gradually, until we reach the meadow of Kara. One is lucky to encounter nomadic Gaddi shepherds in their traditional dress i.e. knee length hand woven woolen cloaks tied at the waist along with their flocks. Kara is another excellent campsite with many species of alpine flowers and great views of a range of unnamed peaks on the border between Kinnaur and Spiti. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 4: Kara - Phustirang (4200 m/13776 ft ) (6 kms/3-4 hrs)

Today the trek is towards the base of the Bhaba pass. The steep trek which continues on the left bank of the river takes us to Phustirang. This is a junction of many small streams. One has a preview of the breathtaking magnif icent views of small peaks in Kinnaur towards the south. Hansbeshan Peak (5840 m/19156 ft) dominates the landscape. Overnight stay in tents.

A small gap in the distant ridge in the northwest is the Pin Parvati Pass. From Bhaba pass the descent towards Bara Bulder starts. The arid brown slopes of the Pin Valley are in marked contrast to the alpine greenery of the Bhaba Valley.Reach Chhochhden and camp on either side of the river. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 7: - Chhochhden - Mud (3750 m/12300 ft) (12 kms/5 -7 hrs)
