Stok Kangri Summit   Welcome Guest

The Stok Kangri summit is a great way as a first step for anyone aspiring to do greater things in mountaineering and if one is not, it still is no small achievement. At an altitude of 6137 M, the Stok Kangri towers over the town of Leh and is held in great reverence by its people. Trekking to the peak around full moon is a truly beautiful experience as the halo of the moonlight gives the peak an ethereal beauty that is difficult to define.

The summit to Stok Kangri is not a technical one and is mostly through Scree and Boulder, though one might find snow in the very apex of the sumit. The challenges of trekking at this altitude remain though and the climb is not to be taken lightly. The views from the summit are spectacular with the Indus Valley and Leh far below us to the north behind which an impressive mass of peaks stretch from the Karakoram to Tibet.  You would also like to explore the fascinating area around base camp what with it being the land of the Snow Leopard and if you are lucky you just might see one of these magnificent animals.

Day 1: Leh (3000M)

Arrive in Leh and acclimatize to the altitude by spending the day in the guesthouse. In the evening visit the nearby Monasteries. Overnight in guesthouse.

Day 2: Leh (Continue with Acclimatization)

Local road trip to the Shey, Thiksey and Hemis Monasteries. This will be a complete day trip and should also take care of greater acclimatization.

Day 3: Leh - Stok - Manokarmo (4100M)

Drive from Leh to Stok village & start the trek to Manokarmo which is a shepherd encampment and about a 4 hour trek. Overnight at camp.

Day 4: Manokarmo - Base Camp (4850 M)

This is a 5 - 6 hr trek depending on your pace. This is a beautiful valley where local people graze their sheep and goats and live during the summer months in small stone huts. Snow Leopards are known to inhabit this region although seeing them is not easy. You are much more likely to see herds of bharal (blue sheep). Golden Eagles can also be seen in this area. The Base Camp for Stok Kangri is at 5000 meters on a pleasant grassy area.

Day 5: Base Camp - Acclimatization & Rest day

Take short hikes to beyond the base camp to get used to the climate and altitude.

Day 6: Base Camp - Advanced Base Camp (5300 M)

This is a short trek and more of a exploratory trek to make sure that there are no glitches. It also is to read the weather conditions and understand what would be a good time to start for the summit. Overnight in camp.

Day 7 & 8: Summiting Stok Kangri - Advanced Base Camp

We have allowed two days for the ascent of Stok Kangri, which will give everyone the best chance of climbing the peak. Much of the climb involves walking up screen and boulder slopes. If there has been some unseasonable snow then there may also be snow on these slopes but normally at the time of year we are climbing the slopes are free from snow. We will make an early start (4 to 5 am) from base camp, climbing to the pass above our camp and then crossing a glacier before heading up screen and boulder slopes. The final part of the climb may involve the use of crampons and an ice axe on easy angled snow slopes to the summit ridge. Overnight in advanced based camp.

Day 9: Base Camp - Manokarmo Village

An easy downhill trek for most of the part which will take about 3 hours. Overnight in camp.

Day 10: Manokaramo - Stok - Leh

A  2 hour trek to Stok and an hours' drive to Leh. Trip ends here.
