Jeep Safari into the rugged North Sikkim region with Gangtok

Day 1: Bagdogra / NJP  – Gangtok (1600m) ( Drive / 6 hrs)

After arrival in Bagdogra we drive to Gangtok which will take about 4 hrs. Overnight stay in hotel/ lodge.

Day 2: Gangtok - Nathu La (4310m) / Tsomgu lake (3780m) – Babamandir - Gangtok ( Drive / 4 - 5 hrs)

Today you will retrace the old silk route and drive up to the magnificent altitudes of Nathu La. The road moves through varied terrains and landscapes, crossing over the tree line of the Sikkim Himalayas and reaches atop a 4130 m pass connecting Indian state of Sikkim with Tibet. Spend some time at the pass and drive to Tsomgo Lake and Baba Mandir, on the way you can buy some Chinese goods, as this is the major spot for trade between the two countries. Further you drive back to Gangtok. Overnight stay in the hotel/ lodge.

Day 3: Gangtok – Lachen (2750m) (Drive / 6 - 7 hrs)

The drive starts early in the morning, though the distance is just 150 kms, the sporadic mountain roads demands the journey more time than usual. The journey moves through various beautiful mountain villages. Today’s destination is a small ancient Tibetan village sitting atop far out ranges, inhibited by the people who fled Tibet during the course of a few centuries. Evening at leisure. Overnight stay in the lodge/ hotel.

Day 4: Lachen - Gurudongmar Lake (5136m) - Lachung (2700m) (Drive / 7 - 8 hrs)

Start early around 4 to reach this amazing frozen lake at an altitude of 5400 m. the road moves around the India China border which is pretty much broken, so an adventure instinct is a mandatory. 82 kms off road and you enter a cold dessert heavily guarded by the army, which makes it possible to drive to this wonder of nature. Spend some time at the lake keeping in mind to drink a lot of water as altitude might get your nerves. Later drive back to Lachen and post lunch get transferred to the twin village of Lachung. Spend the night at a beautiful mountain lodge/ hotel.

Day 5: Lachung - Yumthang Valley (3564m) - Lachung (Drive / 5 hrs)

This morning drive to the beautiful valley of flowers at Yumthang. A small 2 hr drive through a protected forest of a rhododendron sanctuary, you will reach these amazing grasslands of Yumthang valley, grazed by the wild horses and yaks throughout the season, before it gets covered in snow for another 8 months or so. The right season to witness the flowers would be the monsoons, but it gets hard to make the journey as the road gets blocked during the season. Spend some rare moments here before driving back to Lachung. Overnight stay in the lodge/ hotel.

Day 6: Lachung - Gangtok (Drive / 5 - 6 hrs)

Start early to beat the traffic and trace the road back to Gangtok. Spend the evening at leisure. Overnight stay in the hotel/lodge.

Day 7: Gangtok – Bagdogra / NJP ( Drive / 6 hrs)

This is the idea of an amazing road journey crafted for families covering great distances and visiting far out places of India. There are places you can only reach on foot similarly there are places that can only be reached on a motor vehicle.

Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim you will drive up to the magnificent heights of Nathu La pass (4310 m), Tsomgo Lake (3780 m), Gurudongmar Lake (5136 m), and Yumthang Valley of Flower (3564 m), and the twin cities of Lachen and Lachung, covering East and North Sikkim.

Gurudongmar, which remains frozen most part of the year, is a magnificent high altitude glacial lake and is of great spiritual significance for the locals. The drive to the lake is rather bumpy with a lot of off road sections, but the landscape through which you are driving makes it rather intimidating. You cross the tree line and the meadows and enter a vast cold dessert stretching into the horizon; this is the place where India meets China. Spend some rare moments before setting forth on your journey, and rest at Lachung, a growing; valley town hovered by a black giant mountain in shape of a snake. Lachung forms the base for the journey to Yumthang valley, popularly known as 'Valley of Flowers'. Falling under the territory to the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, it is home to over twenty-four different species of this state flower.

In this amazing trip you witness everything that the mountains has to offer, driving through bizarre landscapes you cover great distances and climb great altitudes of the eastern Himalayas. In a week’s time you cover most of the anticipated spots of this region, shake hands with the Chinese soldiers witness rain forests, flora and fauna at various altitudes, a cold dessert and one of the highest lake in the world; which stays frozen most time of the year.
