Arrive at our camp in Rangrik on the banks of the River Spiti. Here you would be given an extensive briefing on various rafting techniques and safety procedures. Post this briefing, we would pack our rafts and begin the trip with a rafting run from Rangrik to Sichling. This is a 25 kms rafting stretch and you would go through many Class I and II rapids. Once at Sichling, we would set up camp for the night. Overnight in tents.

Post breakfast, we would pack up the campsite and begin the rafting run to Nadang. This is a day with a number of Class II & III rapids and we would cover this 16 kms stretch in about 2 hrs. Once at Nadang, we would set up camp for the night. Overnight in tents.

This is the most exciting rafting day as we set off from Nadang to Sumdo. This stretch is filled with Class III & IV rapids and we might have to avoid a few rapids depending on the condition of the river. We end this trip at Sumdo from where you can move to your onward destination.

Rafting expedition on Spiti

The Spiti region is a remote mountainous region in Himachal Pradesh and this region with the Lahaul area forms the road entry to Ladakh from Himachal Pradesh. This are is similar to Ladakh in landscape with it being a cold desert and it forms a stunning backdrop for a different holiday. This area can be approached through Manali (13/14 hrs drive) or you can go on a jeep safari starting from Shimla and enter Spiti after visiting Sarahan, Sangla, etc. in the Kinnaur valley (5/6 days drive). The district HQ for Spiti is Kaza where most of the tourists stay. It has some good hotels and family-run guesthouses for a comfortable stay in this desolate landscape.

We would start on this exciting 77 kms rafting trip down the Spiti river from Rangrik (4 kms from Kaza). The first day from Rangrik to Sichling is an easy day to practise techniques and generally get into the way of things for the expedition. You would go through a number of Class I & II rapids and end the day at Sichling. During the day, you would also paddle past the confluence of the Pin and Spiti rivers at Atarbu before the end of the day. The next day the action heats up as you raft down from Sichling to Nadang through a Class II & III rapids section. All along the stunning landscape keeps you company and you would get a lot of photo opportunities through the trip. The last day of the trip is the wildest as you go through a series of Class III & IV rapids and this would put to use all the skills that you have picked up on the previous days. Depending on the river condition, we might also have to portage (avoid) a few rapids. We end this memorable trip at Sumdo from where you can continue on your journey to Tabo/Kaza or into the Kinnaur valley.
