Himalayan Eco Lodge Sursingdhar
When the stifling hand of Indian summer falls on the country, the only respite from the torrid heat of the plains is to think of a vacation in the lower Himalayas. Even a short break to Uttarakhand can offerample respite. Stay away from mainstream destinations and opt for the lesser-feted, family friendly designations this summer.Since ‘roughing it out’ is not everyone’s cup of tea, finding a place with a comfortable, well-equipped pad is imperative. Fortunately, the regionis an easy drivable distance from key springboards like Delhi and Dehradun.A 6 hours drive is all you need to land in the lower Himalayan region, where you’re in the company of snow-capped peaks. Also, air connectivity to Dehradun and legitimate rail and road access all the way to Rishikesh, Mussoorie and other Garhwal belts are ideal for choosing this as a rejuvenation spot. We’ve handpicked some of the best summer destinations for weekend trips to offer a veritable antidote to the cheerless skies of the plains.
With stunning views to savour, the pine, oak and rhododendron laden hills of Chopta are ideal to spend a weekend in. The meadows and the evergreen forest area of Chopta are a part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary of Uttarakhand. Since it lies close to 9000 feet above sea level, the weather is apt even in the thick of summer. The village is the base to a reasonably strenuous hike to the ancient Tungnath Temple that commemorates Lord Shiva and an additionalkilometer stretch to the Chandrashila Peak. Both make the legging totally worth it. From Chandrashila, the 360-degreeviews of snow-clad peaks are refreshing for the mind, body and the soul. This is a daylong hike from the base village of Chopta, with a quick stop over for maggi and tea at different local stops. This is also a hotspot for birders. The resident Monal, Uttarakhand’s state bird and other winged habitants are easily seen here. Chopta is also an ideal jump off point for a shorter hike to Deoriatal, a lake with mirror-flat waters on a hilltop. Camping facilities can be made available for an ideal outdoor weekend.
The all year round destination, Auli is as charming in the winters, as it is in summers. While skiing enthusiasts flock in the snowy winter months to hit the slopes, summer vacationers use it as a retreat to stay in cooler degrees and enjoy the pastoral vistas around. The perennial draw lies in riding the state-of-the-art cable car, the country’s longest at 4km length. It connects to the temple town ofJoshimath to the upper slopes of Auli. While, a weekend may not be enough to cover Joshimath as well, Auli is ideal for a quick getaway from the city. From here, walks to sprawling undulatingmeadows, gorgeous views of the Nanda Devi and Nar Parvat peaks and the idyllic setting of small hamlets on hillsides are the biggest draw. This is the perfect place to kick the boots and slump into an easy chair, with copious cups of tea and the sweeping views of the mountains for company. For a less sedate holiday, stroll through the meadows or follow muddy village paths into hamlets. Hopefully, you will be invited to a village home for a cup of tea.
Think of the steep valleys of Viraatkhai, off the cantonment town of Chakrata, and pluck out any notions that this is made forhigh-octane adventures. Once you are here, you will realise that this is the ideal place for a weekend getaway from Delhi, for families. Drop the over feted Mussoorie hills and drive to Viraatkhai for an experience of a luxury campsite, completely equipped with plush rooms, luxury tents, common dining pavilion and a string of outdoor and indoor activities. What’s likely to be a hit with the kids is a hike to Tiger Falls close by. Make this a day’s agenda, keeping about 6 hours to walk, splash about in the waterfalls and head back.Tiger Falls is especially scenic; looking like a white sheet of water flung over a rock escarpment. The water plunges down in a bed of white froth, with a pool around it. Apart from Tiger Falls, there are plenty of nature trails around the area. Viraatkhai holds the promise of a memorable family vacation, where there is ample for every age group to do.
Kund lies on the route of the Char Dham yatra in the Mandakini valley, off Rudraprayagin Uttarakhand. The same road leads to the famed Kedarnath temple. But that doesn’t make it a spiritual destination from any stretch of imagination. Instead, think of Kund as the base camp to an adventure filled weekend with natural beauty to savour. If you’re looking for an offbeat vacation, Kund is the ideal setting; pastoral views, the gurgling Mandakini River in the vicinity, access to some of the most ancient temples of the region and easy hikes to Deoriatal and villages around. It makes for a great all round active vacation with something in store for everyone – birding, hiking, nature trails and history. The main hook lies in using Kund as a luxury base camp for the Deoriatal Lake hike, or even the daylong Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila trek if your fitness levels are high.
