The journey begins at Guwahati. Our driver will pick you up at the airport and drive straight to Cherrapunjee (Sohra), one of the wettest inhabited towns on Earth and one of the wettest places on earth, which is a journey of approximately 3 hours. Take the time to relax at your hotel and enjoy a local lunch. We’ll visit the Mawsmai Caves. Explore the underground cave system, walk in upto half a kilometre to take in stalactite and stalagmite limestone formations. We’ll then stop over at the Cherrapunjee Eco Park, where you’ll get a bird’s eye view of the ‘Green Canyons’ of Cherrapunjee & surrounding waterfalls. Dinner will be served at your hotel and we would advice you get a night of good sleep. There’s some trekking planned for the next day.
Today we visit one of the most unique sights in all of India, if not the world. The Living Root Bridges are man-made, natural bridges - and that is not an oxymoron. The Khasi tribes train the indigenous rubber trees to grow & intertwine with each other to form a sustainable alternative to the wooden bridges. There are around 11 root bridges, but we’ll visit the famous double decker root bridges, Rittymen & Umkar root bridges. The visit to the root bridges and back involves 5-6 hours of walking. If you’d prefer a shorter visit or an easier pace, let us know and we’ll choose the bridges accordingly.
After a strenuous day, we’ll relax the pace a little. Today we visit the ‘cleanest village in Asia’, Mawlynnong. En route to the Mawlynnong Waterfall, interact with the locals and talk to them about the unique distinction of their village & how it feels to live there. We’ll also visit a tree house & a living root bridge. Spend the evening around a bonfire and a story telling session with a local Khasi. (recommended activity)
After breakfast, we visit the beautiful Nohkalikai Falls. Hear the haunting story behind it’s name & pray for clear skies. We then drive to Shillong (around 2 hours). Shillong is also called as the Scotland of the East. It has a laid-back small town vibe, but development is rapid with traffic jams being common-place during peak hours. Spend the afternoon & evening exploring the Polo Grounds and witness the locals indulging in an archery contest (teer), followed by a visit to Police and Bara Bazaar. Eat: Try Trattoria Jadoh stall for a quick introduction to the local food.
After breakfast, we’ll depart for a day of sight-seeing around Shillong. We’ll visit the Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Cultures, drive to Laitlum Canyon (featured in the Bollywood movie Rock On 2) via Smit village, for unhindered sights of lush valleys, snaking rivers & verdant gorges. A hike down to the village of Rasong is arduous but rewarding. (however, this is not suitable for kids) You can witness there residents of Rasong use an old rope & pulley to transport food grains and essential commodities down to their village and up to the hilltop. Enjoy a relaxing meal at Café Shillong.
Today we’ll drive up to Upper Shillong for stunning views of Shillong city & the surrounding mountains. After breakfast at ML05, we make our way to Mawphlang, with a short stop at Elephant Falls. Mawphlang, about 26 kilometres south of Shillong and is known for it’s sacred forests. A walk in the sacred grove and a short walk along the David Scott Trail can be the plan for the day. Our driver will pick you up at the end of the trail and bring you back to Shillong. Spend the evening at Cloud 9 – if you’re lucky, you’ll get to witness Meghalaya’s famous music scene.
After breakfast today, we drive back to Guwahati to catch your return flight home or extend your stay to explore Assam.
